CLASSROOM POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS
General:
- Students who arrive to class after the bell has rung and without a pass are considered late. If you arrive on time without your classroom materials you will be marked late. I have pens/pencils/paper in class that may be borrowed. HINT: If you quietly retrieve these materials before class begins, I won't know to mark you late. Don't abuse this.
- NO GUM! It is very difficult to speak a new language while chewing gum. Snacks will be permitted until I see they are a distraction. DEFINITELY bring water. It's good to stay hydrated!
- If you need to leave to use the bathroom or get a drink, please do so quietly without distracting the class. Wait to leave the classroom until I have finished giving instructions. You may not leave in the first 10 minutes or last 10 minutes of class. You will miss important directions / warm-ups / homework information. You will be expected to catch up independently when you return.
Supplies:
- CHARGED CHROMEBOOK (daily)
- Headphones (daily)
- notebook paper
- pens or pencils
Homework/Make-up work:
- Most homework will be turned in through google docs or Estudio. Homework turned in online must be time stamped no later than 7:50am to be considered on time for ALL CLASSES. Printed homework must be complete and on your desk when the bell rings.
- Since most assignments can be completed online, late work will rarely be accepted. In the case of illness or absence, all homework is due by 7:50 on the day you return. It is your responsibility to check the website and stay up to date on assignments. You may always email me with questions. I will not respond to disrespectful emails or requests for help/extra time sent after the assignment is due.
- For any printed assignments - "My printer doesn't work" is not an acceptable excuse.
Solution 2: Email me before class.
Solution 3: Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
- If you can't find what you need online or need help, please email me ([email protected]). I will answer as late as 9pm. Emails after 9pm will be answered the following day. Requests received after 9pm on the day before an assignment is due may not be honored. Again, I will not respond to disrespectful emails or requests for help/extra time sent after the assignment is due.
- Students may turn in late work for half credit OR choose to go to Academic Lunch and receive full credit for turning in the work the next day.
- Students who are absent on the day of a test or quiz will be expected to make it up the day they return.
- Extenuating circumstances such as family emergencies or illness will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Please speak to me in person when you return.
Grading:
- You will receive grades for homework, quizzes, tests, projects, and in-class work.
- Point values will vary depending on the assignment. You will receive a rubric any time a large project is assigned.
- Participation points will be updated at the end of each quarter. Your final participation grade will be based on a self-assessment as well as my own observations.
Classroom Conduct and Behavioral Expectations
1) Speak in Spanish unless given permission to use English. You will not improve your language skills unless you constantly hear Spanish from your teacher and classmates. I will use English only if I feel that it is incredibly important.
2) Students will follow all school policies as they are outlined in the student handbook.
3) Students will be seated and ready to begin class by the time the bell rings.
4) Students will attend class on a daily basis, arriving on time with all materials necessary for that day’s class including a charged Chromebook, headphones, and a pen or pencil.
5) We will do lots of silly activities and games, have partnered conversations, and have individual work time. While working as a whole group, I expect your focus to be on the activity and that you maintain a positive attitude. When doing partnered work, absolutely no English will be accepted unless otherwise noted. Individual work should be done silently and without help from others. You may ask for help from me ANY time. Please raise your hand and wait patiently if I am working with others.
6) Students will treat all members of the class with respect and compassion by actively listening to classmates when they speak, avoiding side conversations, and appropriately responding to class discussion. Appropriate response includes waiting for one person to finish speaking before the next person begins. As a class, we will be sensitive that our words and actions may affect each others’ feelings. Disrespectful language and/or put-downs will not be tolerated. Additionally, as we discuss different cultures and ways of life, I expect that students will respect other cultural traditions and peoples as you would want them to respect our culture. Respect is my most important expectation. This also applies to our student/teacher relationship.
The consequences for choosing not to follow the above expectations include the following:
- verbal warning
- a lunch detention
- a phone call home
- a referral to the office
